“Greatest Threat of Our Age”
Vol: 26 Issue: 21 Friday, November 21, 2003
“And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.” (Zechariah 14:12)
“The greatest threat of our age,” President Bush said in his remarks at London’s Whitehall Palace, “is nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons in the hands of terrorists.”
Last week, reported a leaked UN memo that claimed, it is “just a matter of time” before the terrorist group launches a chemical or biological attack.
The leaked UN memo is soon to be officially released by the UN al-Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee.
While the U.S. government has taken a number of needed steps toward meeting the threat of biological weapons, it still has a long way to go, the memo says.
The Department of Homeland Security is working feverishly to come up with what countermeasures that might be possible.
On Nov. 14, Homeland Security officials gave reporters a look at the BioWatch system. Designed to detect a biological weapons attack, the sensor network has been deployed in 31 major cities, including Washington.
And earlier this week, scientists at the National Institutes of Health began the first human trial of an experimental vaccine against the Ebola virus. The vaccine, which was synthesized essentially from scratch, went from the lab to the clinic in just three years.
Something else President Bush said from Whitehall stands out, however, when looking at preparedness efforts. Complacency.
“On September the 11th, 2001, the terrorists left their mark of murder on my country and took the lives of 67 British citizens. With the passing of months and years, it is the natural human desire to resume a quiet life and to put that day behind us as if waking from a dark dream. The hope that danger has passed is comforting, is understanding and it is false.”
The President continued, “The attacks that followed in Bali, Jakarta, Casablanca, Bombay, Mombasa, Najaf, Jerusalem, Riyadh, Baghdad and Istanbul were not dreams. They’re part of a global campaign by terrorist networks to intimidate and demoralize all who oppose them.
These terrorists target the innocent and they kill by the thousands. And they would, if they gain the weapons they seek, kill by the millions and not be finished.
The greatest threat of our age is nuclear, chemical or biological weapons in the hands of terrorists and the dictators who aid them.
The evil is in plain sight. The danger only increases with denial. Great responsibilities fall once again to the great democracies. We will face these threats with open eyes and we will defeat them.”
Although the Ebola vaccine shows great promise, its trials are being handicapped by the same problem that has plagued the government’s smallpox vaccine program a shortage of volunteers, reports the Washington Times.
More than 200 million doses of smallpox vaccine have been stockpiled and 190,000 have been distributed to the states.
However, as of the end of last month, fewer than 40,000 individuals had been inoculated. “The fact is, it’s ceased,” the CDC’s director of smallpox preparedness, Ray Strikas, told USA Today.
The use of bioweapons, radiation weapons, or even chemical weapons were foretold by Scripture. Today’s OL opened with a description of the terrible carnage that will consume the battlefield in the last days.
Beginning in Chapter 12, the prophet Zechariah gives us a bird’s eye view of the War of Armageddon, beginning at about the mid-point in the Tribulation and continuing through to its conclusion at the Second Coming.
In Zechariah 14:12, as noted, the combatants will face a plague in which, “Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.”
One of the new vaccines is for the Ebola virus, also known as hemmorhagic fever. The following information is graphic, but necessary to understand. If you are having breakfast, finish it before going on.
It causes internal organs of its victims to liquefy, literally melting them away. As the infection progresses, victims bleed out their eyes as they begin to liquefy in their heads.
They bleed out their other orifices as the rest of their internal organs begin to break down and liquefy, until the victim of the infection literally melts. Ebola can be synthesized and easily transmitted.
While Homeland Security may have a working vaccine, once infected, there is no cure.
Ebola is only one of the ‘plagues’ Zechariah spoke of that is consistent biological warfare. In addition to the plague that will consume troops while they ‘stand upon their feet’, Zechariah says, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.” (v 13)
There are a number drugs and other forms of chemicals and bioweapons capable of causing madness. The CIA once ran an operation called MK Ultra specifically to explore ways to use induced insanity as a weapon.
Bio-chemical weapons are devastating, but notoriously imprecise. And, unlike human diseases, bio-chemicals have a more or less universally destructive effect.
“And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.” (Zechariah 14:15)
Zechariah’s battle takes place, as noted, during the last half of the Tribulation Period. He describes a battlefield that baffled his readers for 2,500 years.
His description of the battlefield was so incomprehensible to his readers that it was assumed that it would come about by supernatural means. It does, because God SAID it would happen, but there are no limitations on God.
But there’s nothing in Scripture prohibiting God from using existing technology. Especially technology developed in this generation, since, for all we know, its development could have been to specifically to fulfill this prophecy.
Most of what appeared in Daniel’s visions — as well as the Book of the Revelation — were written off for thousands of years as mysterious and incomprehensible ‘symbolic imagery’.
Both Martin Luther and John Calvin wrote extensive commentaries on the whole Bible — but both skipped commenting on Daniel or John.
But in this generation, what appeared as baffling images of symbolic battles are headline news.
Even Daniel couldn’t figure out what he was seeing, and asked the revealing angel what it all meant.
“And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed TILL THE TIME OF THE END. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” (Daniel 12:9)
