Member Comments: Wow! Great article and I like your use of The Great Divorce to approach your topic. My favorite character was the young man with impure thoughts who submitted to his angel's "treatment."
Has anyone ever noticed that most of the false religious systems were/are headed by a goddess? When Walter Martin was asked how he justified his stance against women in authority in the church, he responded that Jesus appointed no female apostles.
"Commitment, love and devotion"? Good words. But here's one you'll never hear them use, and for a good reason--because they can't defend against it: Holiness.
Our answers to all this are in the Word and Jesus is the Word. Many Christians don't know the Word well enough to defend the faith. They ought to.

Pamela, good point. Since part of Eve's punishment was to be subject to her husband, it seems that that wasn't her original position in relation to Adam. Maybe that's why submission is difficult...it's not what God originally intended for us and unless a man loves his wife like Christ loves the church, it's a hard road. All men have to do is sweat while tilling the soil and put up with some bad harvests.

God told Eve, when she disobeyed and ate the forbidden fruit,
Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you - Genesis 3.16a
As a woman, I have had the difficult lesson of learning to submit to my husband. We women want to take over the reigns and all the masculine terms for God (ie Father, King and Lord) are hard for rebellious women to stomach. Since I have learned submission, I find all those same terms bring me joy and peace.
