J.L. Robb

He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created. Genesis 5:2 NIV

Last week I was riding down the roads of Atlanta when a memory was stirred by an Oldie but Goodie song from the early 60s. I was 15 when the song by the Queen of Motown made its debut in 1962.

Mary Wells is singing about loving two different men, and she loves them “both the same.” She is in a quandary as she describes each man, individually.

The first man treats her like a woman, like a queen, puts her on a pedestal and says the sweet-nothings she has always wanted to hear. He compliments her and loves her dearly.

The second man holds the confusion she feels, because he is the opposite of the first. He ignores her, berates her, diminishes her self-esteem and ignores her. She is torn because he really has her heart. Two lovers, and she is ashamed; Two lovers, and she loves them both the same…

It is interesting that so many women would choose the bad boy instead of the good. Do we, as Christians, do the same? Bad is often more fun.

Is your church like that? There seem to be two spirits running the houses of Christianity in this day and age. Can we love them both the same?

One spirit promotes the God of ancient times, even before Abraham and the Jews existed, the God who created mankind, male and female. There is little confusion, and the adherents of that house of God may not like God’s lack of diversity but recognize that Yahweh is God and there is no other.

This church tries to adhere to the Ten Commandments; and though they do not follow the Law of Moses, they show it respect. It is, after all, God’s Law. While the spirit of this House invites whom they consider the sinner into their house of worship, they do so for prayers of forgiveness for their sins. This House recognizes that God makes no mistakes and sent His only Son, Jesus the Christ, to offer this House a way out, a road to salvation that does not require adherence to ancient Jewish law. This is a spirit of inclusivity for those who pray for forgiveness of the sins they know they committed. This group does not take their children or attend  I’m a Sinner and I’m Proud parades where folk celebrate sin.

Most of the adherents of this first spirit believe that the Rapture will occur before the Tribulation, the Day of Jacob’s troubles, begins. The bad times will be avoided.

The House of the second spirit, also a house of worship, is more like Spirit One Lite.

This House teaches that Heaven is easy, just love one another, no matter who they are or no matter their spirit. Donate money to the church and be saved. This is a House of entertainment where Leviticus 20 is non-existent because of the spirit of inclusivity. The books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy are non-existent. The preacher might be openly gay or a pedophile, but that’s okay with the spirit of this House. In this form of worship, Jesus is liberal and was fine with Mary’s adultery. This spirit does not mention that Jesus told Mary to sin no more. This spirit may from time-to-time mention Sodom and Gomorrah’s fall but never mention that homosexuality was the straw that broke the camel’s back. This spirit is inclusive and teaches that God either made a mistake or has changed His mind.

The House of the first spirit respects God, respects His ways and prays for His forgiveness, that the members might make it to God’s Kingdom. This spirit respects that Jesus did not change the Law but fulfilled it and recognizes that even then, the road to perdition is wide. The first spirit yearns that the Ten Commandments be again placed in our courthouses like it is in the Supreme Court, that manger and Christmas scenes again be allowed in the school system like it was during the days of the Founders of this great country.

The House of the second spirit offers a very wide road to Heaven and a narrow road to perdition. Everything is wonderful. Let’s crank up the band and celebrate the “separation of church and state” and keep God out of schools and the public square. This is the spirit of If it feels good, do it. This is the spirit that teaches praying for forgiveness is not necessary; because what was sin is not sin anymore. We are not a Christian nation, never was and should not hurt the feelings of other religions, like Islam. Like Satanism. Like witchcraft.

A few weeks ago, in a celebration of Christian patriotism, Pastor Robert Jeffress and First Baptist Dallas decided to put up a billboard, expressing their freedom of expression and freedom of religion. The billboard promoted: America is a Christian Nation.

I use promote in the past tense because the billboard did not last long. The Dallas News had a scathing report denouncing the proclamation as untrue; and as always seems the case, Christians turn the other cheek and relent. Don’t want to offend the two who complained.

The Dallas News may be correct in 2018, but they would have been wrong in 1776 when the Founders wrote the clause that the second spirit abuses so much today. Not much chance you will see Church Lite put up a billboard promoting America in the same vein as the actual Founders.

The Dallas News was wrong, as is the ACLU and other liberal organizations who are rewriting God’s Word to more match mankind’s words and desires.

“Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." ~John Jay, 1745 –1829, 1st Chief Justice of Supreme Court

“The great enemy of the salvation of man, in my opinion, never invented a more effective means of limiting Christianity from the world than by persuading mankind that it was improper to read the Bible at schools.” ~Benjamin Rush, Author, Physician, Founding Father

“My ears hear with pleasure the other matters you mention. Congress will be glad to hear them too. You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ.” ~George Washington, May 12, 1779- Speech to Delaware Indian Chiefs

“I verily believe Christianity necessary to the support of civil society. One of the beautiful boasts of our municipal jurisprudence is that Christianity is a part of the Common Law … There never has been a period in which the Common Law did not recognize Christianity as lying its foundations.” ~Joseph Story, Harvard Speech, Supreme Court Justice, 1829

“Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of The Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian…This is a Christian nation” ~U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, 1892

“The United States in Congress assembled … recommend this edition of the Bible to the inhabitants of the United States … a neat edition of the Holy Scriptures for the use of schools.” ~United States Congress 1782, Comment about Congressionally-printed Bible

“The religion which has introduced civil liberty is the religion of Christ and His apostles… This is genuine Christianity and to this we owe our free constitutions of government.” ~Noah Webster- American Schoolmaster; Webster’s Dictionary

“The Christian religion is, above all the religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of wisdom, virtue, equity and humanity.” ~John Adams, President of the U.S., First Vice President, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Signer of the Bill of Rights, and Signer of First Amendment

“As to Jesus of Nazareth, my opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the system of morals and His religion as He left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see.” ~Benjamin Franklin

"The Christian religion is the best religion that has ever been given to man." ~Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson Memorial

“In regards to this great Book [the Bible], I have but to say it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this Book. But for it we could not know right from wrong. All things most desirable for man’s welfare, here and hereafter, are found portrayed in it.” ~Abraham Lincoln

There is much more evidence of where the Founders’ heads were concerning God, Christ and the country.

If your church is of spirit 1 or spirit 2, one of a belief in God’s teachings and one of a belief that God is okay with abortion and gay boy scouts and marriage, then you eventually have to make the choice; because they are not the same. Only one leads to the next life as described in the last chapter of Revelation.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. ~Matthew 7:13-14 NIV

Two churches. Can we love them both the same?
