Nitpicking THE END THE BOOK: Part One
Thursday, May 10, 2012
Have you heard the end is near? Well of course you have, or you wouldn’t be at the Omega Letter trying to figure out what in the world is going on?
The Omega Letter's newest contributing exclusive editor-at-large is J.L. Robb, or "Jerry" for short. Not only is Jerry fun to work with, I also had the privilege of being one of the first people to read Book One of a series of seven that he has in the works. Book Two should be out in July.
When Jerry approached OL about advertising his book, THE END THE BOOK, my first thought was “Oh no, not another Left Behind series.”
I enjoyed the Left Behind series immensely, but before long it became apparently obvious that these were works of fiction and not to be confused with the Truth contained in God’s Word.
While reading the Left Behind series, I found myself having to fact-check between releases so that I wasn’t off on some sign-seeking tangent.
That being said, THE END THE BOOK is not like that at all. All the way to the end of THE END THE BOOK I nit-picked at the facts and enjoyed the fiction. I watched very closely for when or if Jerry was going to go off-track.
A few times I thought I may have caught him, but nope he stayed within the boundaries of the Scriptures. This made for very slow reading on my part.
Jerry has certainly done his homework in the areas of science, mathematics, history, geography, prophecy, etc.
Man, this guy is studied in so many things it is hard to nail down what his expertise might be. Perhaps it is a ‘thinker of thoughts’ and author?
The characters contained in the story are regular folks just getting by in a crazy world. There are quite a few characters to keep up with. Fortunately, Jerry gives a character outline in the beginning that helped me keep up with the changing scenes.
The main character, Jeff Ross is quite a “man’s man”. Jeff is intelligent, fairly well off with morals and an inquisitive mind. I sure do like Jeff Ross, I think he might be a little like his creator, Jerry Robb.
My favorite character so far has got to be Abe the Bartender. I am afraid to tell you more about him, as I might blow some of the story. The way Book One ends, it seems to me that Abe will be a very important fella as the story unfolds.
There is one scene that involves the America Legion Post 251, a terrorist and a room full of vets. It was pretty intense, but I found myself laughing out loud as the scene comes to a close.
Toward the end of the book, THE END THE BOOK (try saying that three times fast), I found myself REALLY wondering what was about to happen next; and BAM - it was over.
Now that the stage has been set with Book One, I am looking forward to really enjoying Book Two. I want to see if Jerry can maintain his established entertainment style and stay true to the Scriptures. But mostly to see what Jeff will do next, and who will be a part of it.
I hope you will pick up your copy, and let Jerry know what you think. Autographed copies are available through his web site, http://www.theendthebook.com/. You can catch Jerry on Facebook unashamedly plugging his book with promises of steak, shrimp and exotic places to visit. There is a certain southern hospitality about Jerry that makes me think that he might not be kidding about the offers.
Thanks for writing this series, Jerry. Your characters remind me of ‘fun faith’ in a seemingly chaotic crazy world.
